Andrea’s Blog

I've written about my pal, Las Vegas dancer/organizer Andrea Hackett, both in The Nation and in my book about Sin City. Now Andrea's got a blog. I expect y'all to bookmark it, check in and stir it up a bit. Good going, Andrea.

I’ll second Marc — I’ve met Andrea and she’s a firecracker of a human being with a fierce intelligence and a wicked sense of humor. Her blog looks great — she offers a lot to munch on. So go visit and start arguing with her!

Is there an echo in here?

Yeah that Hugo Chavez is a real danger to his people. Literacy rate up dramatically and health care for the first time but there are still poor so I guess he’s a fraud.

Oil money buys a lot, rlc, especially if a dictator is trying to buy loyalty. You’re delusional if you think that some good works justifies supporting a dictator–especially one who supports instability in our hemisphere and is capable of many bad works. By your measure, Bush must be great because our economy is doing so well. Anyway, I’m sure that you’ll buy into Andrea’s blog, who at least has the honesty to admit that 60% of Venezuelans still live in poverty.

But I got a good belly laugh when she wrote about Chavez, “He’s avoided an unknown number of assassination attempts, including a call for his head by Pat Robertson.” That Pat Robertson could pray a hurricane on Chavez, if he wanted–a real threat. And, she admits that Chavez is like liberals in this country: “But it’s his message, rather than his actions, that strike a resonant chord with the poor in Venzuela, and indeed the world.” All talk and no action. But, you feel righteous, don’t you? (See Thanksgiving post above.)

Let’s see. He was elected in a process that the Carter Center and others said was fair. (BTW Jimmy Carter recently said that the US electoral system would not meet MINIMUM standards for certification). And he shamelessly “Buys” votes with the oil money. Silly him. He should do what other dictators do. Spend some on arms and make sure that “Terrorists” (former “Leftist” Insurgents – read indiginous peoples) are put down by the army.

Hugo is a blowhard but we’re hardly in a position to talk given our boy-emperior and the shenanagans that brought him to office.

rlc, it’s hilarious that you would accept Jimmy Carter’s saying that elections in Argentina are more honest than elections in the U.S. Carter never met a dictator that he didn’t like.

Chavez’s oil money just allows him to buy loyalty that he would not be able to do under his system in a land without such resources.

Anyway, the point of all of this is that Andrea Hackett is going to be a good source of information for all of you who buy into such nonsense.

  9. richard locicero Says:

Somehow I’ll take Carter’s word over yours.

  10. Randy Paul Says:

It’s even more hilarious that Woody doesn’t know the difference between Argentina and Venezuela.
