Buy spiriva without prescription, Here's my slideshow from Saturday's Phoenix rally against SB1070 -- the Papers, Please law.

And below you can also find my brief text report on Neon Tommy.

I guess I should also throw this in: a couple of self-proclaimed Nazi counter-demonstrators showed up armed with semi-automatic sidearms and one nut job with a short-barrelled shotgun. 1. Listener Says:

The DOJ warned Arizona that it might have to intervene to question the constitutionality of the measure.

One sternly worded letter ought to do it. It’s worked so well everywhere else it’s been tried.

    Go’bama!

Thanks for the pics, Marc. They’re terrific.

  2. Marc Cooper Says:

LOL. I dont think the DOJ is gonna do anything. But I’m willing to be surprised.

  3. Pokey Says:

Yes, I wouldn’t find it out of character for the Obama (we didn’t read the Law) DOJ to suggest that it is unconstitutional for a state law to enforce federal laws.
The Arizona law clearly specifies that it be “implemented in a manner consistent with federal laws,” so it may be hard for Holder to argue that it is unconstitutional.

I would guess that Holder would also FEEL that it is unconstitutional for states to enforce federal counterfeiting and bank robbery laws as well.

”NO OFFICIAL OR AGENCY OF THIS STATE OR A COUNTY, CITY, TOWN OR OTHER POLITICAL SUBDIVISION OF THIS STATE MAY LIMIT OR RESTRICT THE ENFORCEMENT OF FEDERAL IMMIGRATION LAWS”

  4. Bob Williams Says:

In a previous thread, Marc responded to me:

“How the heck did your starving ancestors get here. What ” line” did they stand in to get their pathetic arses into the u.s.? 99 percent of those who claim their grampus came here legally came where when any starving potato eater or anyone else was allowed in with no limits so plse save the bs.”

    I replied:

“My mother applied for a visa in 1953.”

“She secured a sponsor, an aunt she had never met, who posted bond on her behalf. She traveled across her country thee times to be interviewed in depth at the American Embassy. They were especially interested in her membership in a union. The process to gain the visa lasted about 18 months. She arrived in New York in 1954.”

“She was naturalized in 1967, after I was born.”

“Now she feels like a chump.”

“My point, Cooper, is that mom stood in countless lines.”

    ***

Cooper has been too noble to respond.

  5. Marc Cooper Says:

Too noble? Please. Congrats to your Mom. She sounds as worthy of her status as those who walked a week thruogh the desert to be able to wash your sheets.

Now, if we have a NEED for about 1/2 million new immigrant workers per year, why not make the same sort of visa or guest worker permt your mother got available to Mexicans willing to come and do our shit work? That would end 95% of the illegal immigration problem. It’s about that simple.

What country did ur mother come from?

  6. Bob Williams Says:

    Norway.

She’s hadsome experience with real Nazis, unlike the ones your friends are emoting about.

We wash our own goddam sheets. We also do our own shit work. After all, we don’t live in Los Angeles.

Work visas? Our government has at least a dozen programs providing for them. More immigrants? I’m all for it. Let’s pass a law, or something. And enforce it for once.

  7. Bob Williams Says:

And Cooper: All I know is that my mother landed in New York w/ a green card on a Saturday. She found legal employment in Manhatten on Monday, and reported to work on Tuesday. Was it “shit” work? Well, maybe for the crowd at The Nation. But somebody has to clean up after Katrina’s pets, I suppose.

  8. Bob Williams Says:

It was more an atmosphere of fiesta rather than fear that rippled through a crowd of thousands who rallied Saturday on the steps of the Arizona legislature to denounce the newly acted “Papers, Please” law – SB1070.

    Give me a fucking break.

  9. Anna C. Says:

While this fascist new law may be the catalyst to ignite civil unrest…the oil spill issue is life imitating disaster movie.

And BP won’t even provide protective gear and masks and people foolishly agree to work for them doing the dirty work when the gov should have stepped in and made sure those doing the work were under GOV authority and properly protected as this is a public health problem affecting land and resources NOT belonging to BP. THis is where administration so totally weak and lacking in oversight of this mess.

  10. reg Says:

I have this deep thought – if everyone in the world was like my mother we wouldn’t have so damn many problems.

  11. Jules Says:

My mother is better than your mother- so there! :)

  12. devin the dude Says:

Screw you guys. My mother was the best. Therefore, SB1070 makes perfect sense, and is totally enforceable.

  13. Julia Says:

Two of my great-uncles had to be smuggled out of Russia because one was about to be drafted. Many Jews boys drafted into the Russian army were never seen again. My great-grandmother gave them the money to be smuggled from Russia to Poland, and they came to America.

My great-aunt Sara was a Communist in Russia, and my great-uncles wanted her to accompany their mother Gitl, my elderly great-grandmother, to the U.S. in 1920 during the great Russian famine–they had been starving along with millions of others. The U.S. was deporting radicals in the Palmer raids. So my great=uncles sent Sara and Gitl 2nd class tickets (not steerage) as they reasoned the U.S.government thought Communists only came in steerage. They had no problems getting in.

My cousin Rose Gorelick Blumkin wanted to get out of Russia in 1917 to avoid the chaos of the revolution but had no passport. At the Russian-Chinese border she talked the Russian guard into letting her into China. She made it to the U.S. to Omaha where she started the Omaha Furniture Mart, one of the largest furniture stores in the nation.

My grandparents’ generation were desperate because of horrific drafts, famine, revolutionary and so to survive became good at smuggling themselves out and into countries.

  14. Hester Says:

If the great concern is for the welfare and rights of migrants, then why on earth are advocates wasting time excoriating Arizona with demonstrations and boycotts? Anyone with any sense can see the Arizona law was simply an act of acute frustration at the failure of the Federal government to deal with the problems of illegal immigration.
Get your buses together and head for the offices of your senators and congressmen and the home of the President of the United States, instead of indulging in feel good “freedom summers” at the expense of the people of Arizona. Arizona has no power to change Federal immigration law.
Gee, I know that at least some members of SEIU are rather good at trespassing onto private homes of bankers. Why are they not doing that to the members of Congress, demanding the end of the exploitation of undocumented workers by American businesses and immediate immigration reform

  15. Randy Paul Says:

    Anyone with any sense

When people start using phrases such as that, it’s a sure sign IMHO that logic has jumped out and desperation has jumped in.

  16. Randy Paul Says:

My father came in through Ellis Island in 1921, but I doubt if anyone from my mother’s side (consisting of French, Dutch, Scots, Irish and English, all of whom came pre-French & Indian War) came in as no one asked the Powhatan’s, Cherokees, Creeks, Algonquins and millions of other people who were already here before any Europeans arrived if they could come.

  17. Anna C. Says:

I still never read of anyone suggesting that pressure be put on Mexico to reform its activities that creates such a fertile ground for corruption, economic rape and ethnic prejudices that force so many to flee.

Lets discuss the economic back room deals being made by US businessmen that creates such terrible conditions.

And for those assholes who think those who have come here and end up in the fields weren’t invited…you need to get your head out. Years ago an unspoken agreement between gov’ts was to let people come over the border because the cheap agricultural labor was needed.

And lastly, far more pressing problems than this immigration bullshit are in play. Get real.

It is amazing how so many people can be deflected to ragging and railing about something where they can scapegoat rather than facing real problems.

  18. Hester Says:

“It is amazing how so many people can be deflected to ragging and railing about something where they can scapegoat rather than facing real problems.”

I completely agree with your first four paragraphs, but really, immigration is the topic of the post. Take it up with Marc.

And Yes, let’s pressure Mexico to reform its activities. Let’s begin with how Mexico treats those poor Guatemalans and other Central Americans who sneak into Mexico.

  19. Hester Says:

“…as no one asked the Powhatan’s, Cherokees, Creeks, Algonquins and millions of other people who were already here before any Europeans arrived if they could come.”

Yes, and many of them resisted and fought wars with the evil European invaders. Surely you are not suggesting we follow their example?

What was the population of the United States before 1900? We had plenty of space and a need for open borders. Today we do not. If we do have the need for migrant labor, then all I and many others are saying is make it legal and as orderly as possible. These are different times with different challenges and needs. There is nothing racist about wanting secure borders. Just about every country in the world has far more stringent enforcement. Ask President Calderon!

Randy Paul says: “When people start using phrases such as that, it’s a sure sign IMHO that logic has jumped out and desperation has jumped in.”

Yes, indeed. desperation is in the air! Go on with your bad self! Soooo superior.

  20. Randy Paul Says:

    Hester,

Oh piffle. I’m just commenting on your poor rhetorical skills. When someone uses a statement like that, the converse is that those who disagree with you make or have no sense. It’s the sort of thing that probably gives you a warm tingly feeling, but is rather a feeble way to make your case..

  21. Anna C. Says:

Hester…no such thing as secure borders. You want to build a big ugly 3000 mile wall…spend the public coffers to keep out people who just want to work and its been proven they add to the economy.

Its not like we share a border with Iran.

The only security there will ever be is when individuals become personally accountable and humans treat each other civilly.

RIght now I want to see people rally to prosecute BP and the regulators who were in bed with them and to demand they pony up the zillions to clean the fucking mess up if they have to LICK it up and hire and equip the needed workers and make reparations directly to fisherman, shrimpers and environmental groups who need to spend the next decades cleaning up the wetlands. I’d like to see a demand for leadership from a President.

I dont give a fuck about anyone crossing the border. I do care about a toxic substance spewing from a mile below the surface for months on end. That is doing more damage than people coming here who want to work. There are more criminals in office than ever will cross our borders.

  22. Hester Says:

“RIght now I want to see people rally to prosecute BP and the regulators who were in bed with them and to demand they pony up the zillions to clean the fucking mess up if they have to LICK it up and hire and equip the needed workers and make reparations directly to fisherman, shrimpers and environmental groups who need to spend the next decades cleaning up the wetlands. I’d like to see a demand for leadership from a President.”

    I agree.

  23. Forwhatitsworth Says:

Hester, you must be under some mistaken impression Marc, Randy, Anna et al actually want the immigration issue solved.

These are open border, save the poor, the US is rich, equality in all things, liberals. Their open arms and open border thinking have managed to financiall ruin one of the actual riches States in the United States, now the poorest.

With help from Obama, and millions of illegal border crossers joining them in the streets in Arizona, they are making trying to pick the rest off one-by-one.

What’s the latest figure? 13 Trillion in debt and racing ahead a Trillion a year? Make BP’s disaster look white noise. But even theirs was by accident.

  24. Forwhatitsworth Says:

Last two sentences should be “Makes the BP’s disaster in the Gulf look like white noise in comparison. But that was by accident.”

The richest State, now the poorest, is CA. The problem there started in LA and the rest of the cities were pick off, one by one.

  25. reg Says:

Forwhatitsworth ? Uh…nothing. Try again, when you’re not on drugs.

  26. Forwhatitsworth Says:

The only drug I accept is reality. Some need drugs to face it, even after all these years they were suppose to be growing to adulthood after those free loading years in the streets of San Francisco.

Now look at the freaking mess you bastids have made of a once great State, because you couldn’t do reality or growing up.

It still free stuff for everyone that can get there, if Obama can continue to keep paying the minimum due on your credit card, like the good daddy.

  27. John Says:

Marc – I first read about plans for the immigration march on your blog last week. My wife & I ilive in northern Arizona, 150 miles from Phoenix, & decided to join in. Thank you for inspiring us to go, it was time wll spent.

  28. Rhea Trapeni Says:

The President, Barack Obama played 57 rounds of golf this past year and even then, he still can’t break 80. Not that it matters.

  29. Michel Rueck Says:

…I am so dumb. I have a whole study guide to do with the book and returned my book today. D: Internet surfing all the answers? Yes. lol
