Some thoughts on the election:
1) You really have to feel sorry for the GOP in New Jersey. A US Senator and the Governor resign in disgrace and not only can’t they win but they even lose seats in the legislature.
2) Boy Bush really helped out Kilgore in Virgimia didn’t he? I guess Republicans will really be after him to campaign for them. Or will Democrats pay his airfare?
3) The shellacking that Arnie got here in “Kaliforniah” and the loss suffered by the Democratic Mayor of Minneapolis, who endorsed Bush in 2004, to another Democrat, combined with the New Jersey result points out a real problem for Republicans. We hear a lot about how serious it is that Dems are being shut out in the South. But the flip side is never mentioned. In the Northeast, the Upper Midwest and the Pacific Coast it is getting harder and harder to be a member of the GOP. Already the polls show “Little Ricky” Santorum down by double digits and getting further behind by the month to Bob Casey Jr. If you are Susan Collins or Lincoln Chaffee are you going to be amenable to Shrub’s legislative goals? No you are going to run scared. Oops! There goes his “mandate”. And with the mountain West trending Democratic (Dem Governors in Montana, Arizona, and New Mexico and a Senator in Colorado) it may just be that the deep South is all the Dixiecrat turned Republican Party will have reliably left. And if the Dems make Florida competitive, which is not a stretch, who cares about the other states? Not that I would write them off either although Alabama and Missisissippi are probably hopeless.

Oh, and the Dems gained seats in the Montana Legislature too.

Democrats won big on Long Island, too. Dennis Dillon was defeated for reëlection to his ninth term as DA. The only NYC Council seat to switch parties went from Republican to Democrat on Staten Island; far and away the most conservative of the five boroughs (and the only one to have a Republican congressman.

And Steve Gilliard writes on his blog that he thinks Mike Bloomburg will switch back to the Dems next year.
