John and Augusto Together at Last

Somehow I missed this news from earlier this week. Chilean judicial officials issued 129 arrest warrants for former agents of the Pinochet dictatorship for their role in kidnapping, torture and disappearance. As I’ve said umpteen times, this sort of stuff does NOT fade easily into time and inevitably comes back to bite its practioners — even 35 years after the fact.
It’s something the former Bushies should keep in mind. Time is not necessarily their friend. It’s certainly an issue that John Ashcroft is thinking about this weekend. A federal court has opened the door for him to be sued for his role in illegal detentions when acting as Attorney General.
On my planned Labor Day BBQ I’ll pop open an extra Corona or two, toasting to the tough luck shared by both the former Chilean state police and the former U.S. Attorney General. Birds of a feather,

Birds of a feather, indeed.
Sorry, Marc–I couldn’t resist.

Let’s give Ashcroft his due, though, since he could have been worse. He did refuse to sign on to illegal wiretapping, even while being pressured on his sickbed. Maybe he was OK with torture because he himself could apparently have stood up to it.
