holy shit. the whole ring of fire has awakened. talk of tsunami warning for hawaii…you were up early, reg! i only just caught the news now..11:30 am EST.
I must say man, your blogroll is simply by far the greatest. I found it simply by scoping around AOL and tbh I am without a doubt glad that I did. Keep it up. On a sidenote, http://videotrends.net/ has the first video footage I’ve seen on this event.
It’s bad, but it’s not looking as bad as it did in my mind’s eye when I heard “8.8?”
Just keep in mind Bob that all the lives saved were because all those ridiculous and absurd Government regulations (Building Codes) that you conservatives insistently want to obliterate.
Versus all those ridiculous and absurd government regulations AND ENVIRONMENTAL REGULATIONS that you liberals insistently want to expand to halt all progress. To you, endagered rat fleas are more important than people.
If people are willing to live in areas of nautural disasters, then they should be willing to adapt their building codes to survive those natural disasters – unlike people in L.A. who build houses that collapse under mud slides, fall into the ocean, burn up from wildfires, and crack and crumble from earthquakes — just so that they can blame Republicans and demand government help when things go wrong.
i will think the best and presume all family and friends are safe?????
extraordinary to see that newer buildings at least withstood the quake enough to perhaps not kill anyone inside– though obviously massive demolitions and rebuilding will have to occur and a huge amount of middle class people/professionals are now homeless. will be quite a dislocation for some time.
there is an interesting building technique that is deemed earthquake and hurricane proof: dirt bags covered in a sort of mud plaster. very charming looking when done. Also great for insulation against heat and cold
Anna, there’s a link to it at the top right of this page.
Sergio, you’re tedious. It’s almost like, right after the earthquake, you were contemplating how to turn it into an anti-Obama comment, before he even opened his mouth.
It never ceases to amaze me that Woody, as stupid as he is, is able to operate a computer.
Sergio…first of all–according to science geeks–the quake in Haiti was far more violent. The diff between 7 and 8.8 was space the shaking part of the fault covered. The Haiti quake was shallow and very violent and very local.
Yes, the article is stupid trying to compare Chile with Haiti. Its a pointless conversation.
What is horrible is with the cascade of diabolical natural disasters and geo political turmoil a place like Haiti that is in the most desperate straits in the world gets forgotten. Chile will recover…In Haiti fucking aid agencies are dithering over whether to give them tents or tarps!
PS I am sending money every month to Partners in Health– if anyone is interested in where one can be sure one’s dough will actually go to an org that has its feet on the ground and understands the need to deal laterally–this one seems to be IT as far as Haiti is concerned.
i lived through the 1965 one. as well as the less severe LA quake sin 71, 87, and 94
but Obama also knows plenty about bullshitting, and I won’t cease pillorying his spineless party until they do something for someone other than bankers and militarsists.
To briefly go back to an old discussion between reg and myself….
Many of us on the right like to claim that the Old Media is just an arm of the Democrat Party. Of course some of that on our part is bombast, but incidents such as the following tend to make conservative’s complaints seem more like right-on-target truth than over-the-top complaining.
Kevin, I’m in Tuscaloosa, the former HQ of the Imperial Wizard, and just got off of MLK, Jr. Blvd. Guess what, and no kidding. Where MLK ends, the street changes names to Watermelon Road. Ironic, huh? But, try to worry a little more about people in Chile rather than me.
Excellent post. If you need to listen to BBC Radio on the iPhone – I strongly recommend BBC Radio iPhone Streams – it is easily the most convenient way to listen to BBC Radio on the iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch and it’s free at BBCStreams.com.

Chileans don’t need US “help” now…
How about helping your uninsured unemployed workers, Obama?

It’s amazing how some people can spin absolutely anything into an obnoxious criticism of Obama.

Lordy…tweets are giving a very grim picture. Also disturbing one tweeter seems to be racheting up political paranoia.
Marc, when you can breathe, please let us know the accounting of your family and friends.

Just sayin’…
