Here's my long feature piece in The Nation about John McCain's fight to win renomination to the Senate.  Here's the lede:

Wow. Between this article and the recent DN! news special on Arizona shows you just how whacked Arizona really is. Thanks Marc.

  2. reg Says:

I think Haney’s on to something regarding the US Catholic Conference of Bishops – they are what would broadly be labeled “social democratic.” While I have differences with them on some particulars of decisions related to health care (abortion, end of life) they pretty carefully follow the teachings of the Hippie Peacenik Communist:

“In our Catholic tradition, health care is a basic human right. Access to health care should not depend on where a person works, how much a family earns, or where a person lives. Instead, every person, created in the image and likeness of God, has a right to life and to those things necessary to sustain life, including affordable, quality health care. This teaching is rooted in the biblical call to heal the sick and to serve ‘the least of these,’ our concern for human life and dignity, and the principle of the common good.”

The Bishops also generally in the “left” camp on immigration reform, as well as war/peace. Within the terms of this Christian “faith” discourse, Haney – based on what I read here – is clearly in lockstep with Satan.

  3. reg Says:

“These are the same folks who wanted to take Barry Goldwater’s name off the GOP headquarters because they thought he was too liberal.”

My guess – based on a reading of the “late” Goldwater who railed against the “religious” Right and supported essentially libertarian causes like gay rights and legalized pot – is that he wouldn’t have wanted his name on the contemporary GOP HQ.

  4. Marc Cooper Says:

    I am sure of that.

  5. Cappadonna Says:

Yes, Catholic Bishops and most Black Ministers are actually on the very far left on issues that don’t pertain to sexuality. Black ministers regularly rally against war. Beyond gay rights and abortion, you’re probably not going to find a bigger group of liberal hippies types.

Reg, I feel you — the Republican Party is now the Witch Hunting Party of America. Like Ron and Rand Paul, Goldwater didn’t support affirmative action, but he did support civil rights. The modern GOP, particularly in AZ would have called Goldwater a ‘Nigger loving Communist’ and lynched along side Dr. King and Bro. Malcolm.

  6. reg Says:

Actually C, Goldwater opposed the 1964 Civil Rights Act, although he’s one of the few I actually believe opposed it wrongheadedly on “Constitutional” grounds. Given his later support for gay rights, my guess is that he came to regret that position but I haven’t actually read anything about it. But despite the awfulness of his 1964 campaign coalition – which included Phyllis Schlafly and her ilk – as an “elder statesman” he became a true “maverick” of the libertarian Right, as opposed to McCain who is just a prick.

  7. Kit Says:

There is no question that McCain is controversial. The guy has balls though and when fighting this disgusting administration I would take McCain over JD any day! I am not sure JD could even put together a sentence by himself that was factual and honest.

  8. reg Says:

    “The guy has balls though…”

McCain has proven himself a coward. What the Vietnamese couldn’t take from him, he’s handed over to the ignorant, resentment-driven Right of the GOP. The guy’s picture should be in the dictionary next to “narcissism” and “opportunism.” His appointment of Palin as side-kick proved he doesn’t give a shit about the country and will do anything in the interest of his own ass.

  9. Hester Says:

I agree. I lost all respect for this guy when he chose Palin. He seemed oddly disconnected and uninformed about her qualifications for the job.

Off-topic, but THIS is what should have us up in arms. Millions of Americans out of work, schools all across the country are cutting vital programs and axing teachers, and we carelessly lose billions in Iraq …and probably in Afghanistan, too!

Gee Marc, I would’a thought a piece on Mr. Charlie would have been more interesting…..an current for heaven sake.

Both of these old lifers, and all the others that die in their wheel chairs with drool cups attached after a century of porking our credit cards, are disgusting examples of the screaming need for TERM LIMITS.

The audacity, the chutzpah, the arrogrance, the sense of entitlement ouzzing out of Mr. Charlie is as thick and slimy as the stuff floating in the gulf. Only slightly more than the Congressman from Harlem he replaced.

But like all lifers, he will not leave, he will not leave for anything anyone or any principle. He will take down an already destitute Democratic party in the middle of an election with him.

    Pathetic and disgusting.

  11. Jim R Says:

McCain is a Saint in comparison to most of these bastards.

Charlie Rengal will have due process afforded him, you scumbag.
He took a bullet in the stomach during the Korean war , you jackass, and hasn’t had a bad day since…
given that a full 1/2 his life he was living under the apartheid system imposed country club assholes like you, he is still a full member of the House of Representatives for the people of East Harlem
and is addressed as a “gentlemen” by his peers.
You on the other hand can’t seem to find your ass or patriotism on either hand and must rely of Fox… jerk!

I am not prone to violence but I am not above slapping you!

  13. Johnny Holmes Says:

Hey Jim R, I’m curious what you think the practical results of term limits on congressmen would be.

If term limits were in place would we not be in a depression now? Would the top 1% not be gathering more and more of the country’s wealth for itself?

Would the US stop spending more on it’s military than the next 10 countries combined?

And what do you think about term limits for federal judges, including the Supreme Court?

  14. Ned Says:

Jim R, right on…Johnny, term limits are not an issue now, irrelevant conversation piece at this point. Our administration is a mess, and adding to Congress with the likes of a stupid blowhard like JD would only burry the Republican’s desire to stop the trend of Socialism that is creeping up every day.

  15. Randy Paul Says:

McCain is a Saint in comparison to most of these bastards.

Yes, saints often cheat on their wives and dump them for young rich blondes.

  16. Jim R Says:

“I am not prone to violence but I am not above slapping you!”

Girls throw slaps Pablo. Men throw punches. I would take your best on if it helps you man-up.

Gentlemen is as gentlemen does, and it’s Rangel btw. Yes maybe I was too hard on Charlie. He is definitely from the old school of politics where his behavior was once overlooked, but damn, he unseated Powell, who was also censured, on the promise to drain the swamp at home, and here he is writing tax code for the rest of use in House Ways and Means, while avoiding it for himself??

“Yes, saints often cheat on their wives and dump them for young rich blondes.”

I did say ‘in comparison’ Randy. You have to admit McCain did things to really piss his party, for one obvious example McCain/Feingold, and piss off both parties at the same time, for one obvious example trying to stop pork barrel spending….and there were many others that made him the Democrats darling before the hard fought election against President Obama

You will have to admit it is unusual for politicians to go against core beliefs of their party, and core needs of both party to keep them in office, porking the hell out of the rest of us.

Unfortunately, like all the rest, he wont go away quietly. He wont go away in dignity. This he has in common with the rest.

  17. reg Says:

“Republican’s desire to stop the trend of Socialism that is creeping up every day”

This insane horseshit is why the current crank incarnation of the GOP – where wretched know-nothings like Michelle Bachmann and a Sarah Palin appear as “leadership – is, paradoxically both irrelevant to any reasoned political discourse regarding critical issues facing the country, yet dangerous. If they didn’t have an economic and employment crisis their half-wit ideology largely created (with an assist from cowardly DLC-ish Dems) to demagogue, they wouldn’t be picking up a single seat this fall. As it stands, I predict their gains will be far less than expected – and mostly attributable to weak Dem strategy rather than any positive alternatives (other than racist paranoia and mindless yammering about “socialism”) offered by the GOP.

“Ned” needs to be fitted for a strait jacket…this is a voice from the Tea Bagger’s Nut House.

  18. David Says:

“A lot of so-called conservatives today don’t know what the word means,” he told the Los Angeles Times in a 1994 interview. “They think I’ve turned liberal because I believe a woman has a right to an abortion. That’s a decision that’s up to the pregnant woman, not up to the pope or some do-gooders or the religious right. It’s not a conservative issue at all.”–Barry Goldwater

I wish I could find another quote that was interesting. Near his death, Goldwater asked that he not be associated in any way with the Republican Party after his death since he believed that they had done far more harm to America than the Democrats. Fascinating man, to say the least.

  19. pabloN. Says:

“Republican’s desire to stop the trend of Socialism that is creeping up every day”

We (as Marc says) six socialists at a losers picnic… without regiments… sure do wield the lions share of the discourse among the center-right and the neo-facsistas…

I daresay, perhaps a red armband… or a neckerchief- red and embossed with the hammer and sickle… oer perhaps a simple red handkerchief for the breast pocket is a bit more understated.

Did I mention that I saw a piece in the New Yorker on Marx and Gardening? The veggies which exploit the richest soil yield the sweetest crop..

For the socialist creep watchers among you there is a subversive pinko cabal operating nationwide at the municipal level. They purchase one copy each among a compendium of books and then loan them out to the public free of charge.
Authors are cheated out of millions in royalties… the whole racket is funded by honest, if clueless, republicans.
Much of what is loaned out is commie agitprop… and anyway people carrying books are automatically suspect.

This state sponsored socialism has been around for well over a century and there is only one plausible explanation as to why Republicans as yet have not caught onto this insidious situation….

  20. Randy Paul Says:

I did say ‘in comparison’ Randy. You have to admit McCain did things to really piss his party, for one obvious example McCain/Feingold, and piss off both parties at the same time, for one obvious example trying to stop pork barrel spending….and there were many others that made him the Democrats darling before the hard fought election against President Obama

And lately his actions prove that he lacks the courage of his convictions, assuming those were actually his convictions or just his positions having much as much actual heft as say, a wind sock.

  21. reg Says:

“You will have to admit it is unusual for politicians to go against core beliefs of their party”

Not that unusual – haven’t you heard of Clinton and the DLC Democrats ? Even the “socialist” Obama governs much closer to the “middle” than by the “core beliefs” of liberal Democrats. The problem with politics in this country is that the GOP is running off the ideological cliff, with crazies like Bachmann, Palin, the Ayn Rand zealot Paul Ryan and the FOX/Talk Radio contingent setting the agenda. The Dems liberal base is nowhere near as ideologically driven as those nutballs, nor is the Dem leadership as timid in their face as the cranks and cowards who “lead” the GOP to the tune of the Andrew Brietbarts, the stark raving know-nothings, the sign-waving paranoid and racist nativists, “lock-and-load” gun nuts and crazy old ladies in funny hats.

  22. reg Says:

Pablo – I’m shocked at your naivete. The public library system was funded by the capitalist Andrew Carnegie in order to place a “charitable” veil over the rapacious face of capitalism and his accumulated profits. If selling books was as profitable as selling bread, there would have been no such largesse. Socialism has historically meant social ownership of the means of production, not “progressive” marginal tax rates, public perks and parks, or even a system of safety nets. You’re parroting Jim R’s “history” of “socialism” here.

    (Oh…it was a joke ? Sorry. I’m irony impaired.)
