Resurrection

Having spent a fews days in the hospital this past week, I couldn’t bring myself to re-watch Season 6 of The Sopranos as I had planned for Sunday.  Just too much of the last season centers on Tony strapped to his own hospital bed, fighting for his life. No thanks.

That doesn’t mean that the start of the new and final season of nine episodes starting tonite isn’t the most anticipated event in this household. We’ve been counting it down for months. Indeed, when I was in lockup Saturday morning I told the doctor he was either going to get me home in time or else I was simply going to leave and take the heart monitor with me.

Smart doc, he cut me loose.

I do think it worth noting that the resurrection of The Sopranos takes place on Easter Sunday. On Easter Sunday fifty years ago, the entire country would have been transfixed by the ritualized depictions of a rising Jesus and all of the Goodness that he and His Father have bestowed on the earth (from Aushwitz to Rwanda to Iraq).

As it was, this has sort of been Jesus Week anyway on TV –  Easter being the excuse for the networks and the cablemeisters to roll out an excessive dosage of “spiritual” programming.

How refreshing, then, to have Tony push Jesus aside tonite, allowing us to revel in what we are really like. On display will be the real spirit that built America. And that we can celebrate Tony on a day once reserved exclusively for the J-man must mean that, in spite of everything, there is progress in human history. Eventually we do crawl out of the darkness.

Glad you’re feeling better. You actually sound pretty good.

But clearly this notion that Tony Soprano better represents the spirit of America on Easter Sunday, well, one can only hope that you make a fuller recovery.

God bless us all, Baby Jesus.

Looking forward to it as well. For my money, one of the best actors on the whole show is Robert Iler who plays AJ. His transition last season from dipshit to responsible boyfriend surrogate dad was a bit abrupt but I’m looking forward to seeing if he’s put in a Michael Corleone situation…

I’m missing something here. Seems more like acerbic counter-mythologiziing than “deconstruction”. I think I’ll leave this one to Woody, who more than likely shares some version of the notion that the “J-Man” narrative is about either “all of the Goodness” that inundates our world or “the real spirit of America”. You guys can fight it out.

My understanding is that Jesus came to take away the sins of the world, rather than bestow anything upon us (the latter would be a Church construct probably). Either way, Jesus is obviously slacking off. Didn’t someone say Jesus was a Democrat? Makes perfect sense :-)

Sounds like Brother Bradley has his Christian holidays mixed up. Jesus of Nazareth was 33 years old when he rolled away the stone on Easter. He was no mere babe. And one need not get too deep into biblical studies to realize that Disciple Cooper is correct in noting the profound ways that the likes of Tony Soprano inspire much of modern human conduct. Read your Deuteronomy for god’s sake.

ICU?? Sheesh, sounds serious. I am very happy you are better. Welcome back.

Can’t wait for the reaction of the Italian-American Anti-Defamation League either.

Marc, re Easter, all I can say is “They ain’t making Jews like Jesus Anymore!”

    Amen, Brother Friedman!

Actually, I’m joking. Ripping off Talladega Nights, if you must know.

Ironic humor is always dangerous in political circles, since it so frequently has to be explained.
