Rise and Fall of the Rods

We briefly interrupt the war in Georgia to announce that The Daughter has written a fine piece on the rise and fall of the lad-mags.

Now I know why I don't write for Playboy anymore!

And, to think that Marc wrote a piece for Playboy…not that anyone knew the magazine had articles.

  2. Woody Says:

With nothing better to do at the moment, here’s a picture of Marc.

  3. McLovin Says:

You have every right to be proud, Marc. Both that your daughter has chosen journalism and that, while still in college, she’s published in a major magazine. Bravo!!

  4. Kevin Says:

It was an entertaining article, to be sure!

I’ve always wondered who bought Maxim, FHM and Stuff, publications where you could judge the book by its cover.

  5. Marc Cooper Says:

Woody! You’ve exposed my double life! Now the IRS is gonna be on me for my secret $13million a year contract.

Since when is ESQUIRE a “Men’s magazine” like PLAYBOY or MAXXIM? I thought the epicenter of “The New Journalism” had other claims. See “‘Smilin’ Thru the Apocalypse” - a compendendium of articles from the sixties (the mag’s golden era) to get a feel.

And while I’m sure this doesn’t apply in your case, Marc, I see that N. has joined other famous scions in entering dad’s profression:

    John Broder

    Andrea Koppel

    Chris Wallace

And now Tim (man of the people) Russert’s son will be at the conventions.

When did journalism become an inherited position?

Esquire, like Playboy and GQ, is not what it once was. Here’s an example of a recent feature — “75 Things Every Man Should Do Before He Dies” — that stands as a remarkable piece of self-parody. It’s exactly the sort of drivel discussed in the RadarOnline takeout.
