A great series. Can’t wait for it to return next year. The daughter writes about it here.

As I am a “self identified” HOUSE junkie… ( Though I think Edie Falco’s Carmella was one of the greatest ever fucking performances in the history of the world– I have not been moved to watch Nurse Jackie or whatever the series is called)
But lumping the House character in with substance abusing creeps is pretty much to suggest you have not been watching the series with any regularity.
1. His vicodan habit was generated for some recreational fun. The character has a freak affliction that leaves him with searing, acute pain.
2. The scripts continuously deal with the issue of his need for drugs to stop the pain and the lengths to which he will go and things he will try to stop it. His taking vicodan is a constant topic of debate amongst his colleagues.
3. The thrust of the scripts is to always focus on the moral, ethical and human conundrums that drive people
4. The House character is also rather mythical and then not so mythical representing the complexities of genius. Its one of the few characters written that has any relation to a real human being with all their flaws.
5. The new season opens with him having committed himself voluntarily to the looney bin. Several episodes have dealt with both his need for pain killers and the toll they take on his health. His dyspeptic personality, constant physical pain and the toll the vicodan and search for pain relief have now taken a toll on his mental health.
6. The mythic part of the character is that its based on Sherlock Holmes and the god of rationality.
Its a brilliant series and lumping it in with some sort of fun with some sort of sly tele dish of take drugs and get away with it– especically if you are doctor is really a cheap shot and poor journalism.
There is plenty to take pot shots out without misrepresenting the story line of one of the few well drawn series and characters on television.
Funny, there are things to criticize about the series and that is some of the political cheap shots that get slipped into the scripts and some very ugly stuff. But you have clearly not watched it enough to know what would be worth a critical word.

OOPS! It should read His vicodan habit was NOT generated out of recreational use.
And now that I mention it I would like to bring up the issue that is played up in the series and that is searing chronic pain.
What would any of us do?
And there are those who can self regulate and know when things are getting out of control and when one can’t handle things anymore and will opt to get help. That is called being CONSCIOUS.
It is refreshing to see a character written that reflects that sort of consciousness.
