The LAPD Blogs: "Just The Facts, Ma'am"
Roll over, Jack Webb. The LAPD has started a blog. What a great idea. From the pleistocene era to the new world in just about a decade.
The blog's only a few days old and still a bit stiff. A message from Chief Bill Bratton and even some responses to recent editorials in the local paprts about the LAPD, but still lacking some real juice.
Eventually, one hopes, that with the benefit of web anonymity some rank-and-file cops will be joining the fray and letting loose. They're known to be opinionated people. The LAPD command -- and not only the command-- has some pretty erudite folks in it and it would be great to see them start writing.
These are particularly interested times for the force. Bratton has gone far to reform both the image and the substance of the LAPD -- this is definitely no longer your father's boys in blue. But there's still a long way to go. The five year old federally-fashioned consent decree -- imposing certain checks and reforms-- is up for renewal. Bratton would like to chuck it. Critics of the department, including the independent Inspector General, want to extend it. This should make for great debate on the blog.
A belated welcome, also, to another blog that's going to be worth following. Investigatve Reporter Ken Silverstein -- just recently of the L.A. Times-- has taken the seat of Washigton Editor at Harper's magazine and is also running its new online sheet. Ken does journalism the old fashioned way: he breaks stories.

I’d heard that the LAPD was going to have a blog, and gave it little thought. Thank you for linking. Is this done in any other urban area?
I would have some feelings of trepidation about the anonymity of posting. Still it shows the possible power of the blog, sort of like a town hall discussion, with millions of participants. Perhaps some will be able to vent their anger directly, and not take it to the freeway. (Ever hopeful)

The only problem with LAPD is they’re on the wrong side of the law. But when there are strikes, they are always out there marching in solidarity with their union brothers and sisters. They are known to walk picket lines in the hundreds. even thousands and in uniform at once when carpenters, janitors, textile workers, nurses are out on strike.
