While we are somewhat on the subject of “places that you have lived”…Marc, I love the Nation but hey I gotta tell you that yoour colleague Alexander Cockburn is a real sumbitch for identifying Oklahoma as a state (along with six other states here in the mid west region) where “sex with livestock is still commonplace.” (This is in his current column).
I think that you could pretty much put a picture of him underneath an encyclopedia index for “Why Americans hate the Left” and not go wrong.

It’s a bakery grunt; sweep the floors; clean the bread machines; stack hot bread pans as the come off the assembly line on hand trucks. The same place my old man worked his whole life until he had a heart attack and they fired him. The place, as Stephen King will tell you, was a nightmare. December 26th, 2005 at 1:15 pm
Now, see? Doesnt that make everyone feel a BIT better and tad a warmer about everyone else once we reveal we are all just humans like the others? Doesnt the thought of me and John Moore sharing a cold mountaintop while working the ionespheric skip bring a smile to your mouth (if not images of Brokeback mountain)? And Ahmed swooning over his Mom’s coooking? Woody taking out the trash? Or Tim snuggling under the covers to catch one more episode of Medical Detectives? Ahhhh, the humanity, the humanity.
To David: I assure you quite publicly that I and many many others in this world share your view of Mr. Cockburn. He gives more than the Left a bad name, my friend.
December 26th, 2005 at 1:40 pm
Yeah all but Woody’s who revealed no honesty at all like the rest of us. And of course my first job description threw some as well. It was real.
December 26th, 2005 at 2:04 pm
Yeah, Woody’s was a cop-out….but a hilarious cop-out!

Mark A. York, I thought that you would appreciate being linked in my list. Of course, I was just kidding.
December 26th, 2005 at 2:54 pm
What???? I thought Woody’s choices were ENTIRELY revealing. (Note to Woody: Keep the aforementioned material away from your therapist at all costs.)
I would, however, like to hear a bit more about the electrician gig in a former lifetime.
PS: I visit that 3rd website you mentioned a lot too. What’s up with that????
December 26th, 2005 at 3:10 pm
I didn’t read your list, but revealing for sure if you mean a man who doesn’t get out much. Or around. Some of the readers are really far-flung and that experience shows. As I’ve said humor is rooted in tragedy. Knowing what’s funny and what isn’t is very telling.
December 26th, 2005 at 3:14 pm
Right, that isn’t funny. Since it’s your science that’s the fiction in the equation. There’s your “wrong way feldman” tradgedy.
December 26th, 2005 at 4:35 pm
York: “You mean you really thought they called it Slave literally? ”
Of course not, no more than in a photo set up when one flash is “slaved” to another does it mean that one flash is owned by the other flash.
But, it could have had the word Slave and mean something else, something specific or something totally plebian. Words like Circus Roustabout or Oil Field Roughneck, Groupie and Roadie come to mind also… Unless of course you think a Roadie works on a road.
December 26th, 2005 at 4:55 pm
Buddy I’m a ’60s rocker. It could have meant a brake part but using occam’s razor one could figure I was being facetious. And appropriate.
December 26th, 2005 at 5:21 pm
Mark A. York, you’re right. I don’t get around much. I’ve never been a slave or broadened my intellectual horizons in Alaska, and the only people I can meet in Georgia are the old people driving between Ohio and Florida. BTW, you spelled tragedy two different ways within four mintues. How do you do that? “Wrong way Feldman” was a character on Gilligan’s Island. Maybe you meant “wrong way Corrigan,” Little Buddy.
—————
rosedog, what an interesting life! How did some guy let you get away? Where were you a cheerleader?
I’ve never had a huckleberry pie, but I will let on that I use to be the contoller for a major pie manufacturer and we would grab hot pies off the line any time we wanted to take a break. That wasn’t a good way to keep weight off. My sense of taste became developed enough that the lab would call me over as a tester to see if I could detect any slight changes that they made to the pie formulas–which I almost always could.
As an electrician in my former life in Colonial America, my jobs were to discredit Ben Franklin’s lightning experiment and to make sure that electricity didn’t gain popularity in order to protect the whale oil industry until whales became scarce and until oil was drilled in Titusville, Pennsylvania–setting the stage for the oil barons and the ultimate election of George W. Bush. Isn’t it funny how history is affected by things that happened a couple of hundred years earlier?
————–
Marc Cooper, I’d rather imagine you and John Moore on a mountain top adjusting your ham radio antennae rather than adjusting your zippers. To show you how far my mind is off from that, I honestly thought that Elton John had married a woman until I saw a picture of the happy couple days later. That’s true.
It was interesting to gain some insight into people’s lives and learn what we had in common. It also changed my perceptions of some people, whom I had imagined differently. I’m glad that Randy passed this idea to you and that you posted it.
December 26th, 2005 at 7:21 pm
For the vacation part, I would like to add my week in Amish Country in Berlin, Ohio.
I really thought it was going to be a boring weekend…it ended up lasting a week! That piece of America was so intensely beautiful.
December 26th, 2005 at 7:33 pm
I mean, I thought it was going to be boring….but I enjoyed it so much, we stayed a week.
Ohio was nothing like, what I thought it would be.
December 26th, 2005 at 8:14 pm

I guess Christmas is officially almost over, so I can revert to my usual bullshit…
4 jobz – bartender, dishwasher, cemetary maintenance, warehouseman – none of these recently thank god.
4 flicks – The Gospel According to St. Mathew (Pasolini), The Searchers, Pepe Le Moko, Dr. Strangelove (this is pretty arbitrary, in that there’s no Marx Brothers, no Alec Guiness, no Cary Grant, no Cagney, no Bogart, no Sam Peckinpah, no Billy Wilder, no Scorcese, no Howard Hawks, no HItchcock and no Sergio Leone)
4 places lived – Austin TX, NYC, Chicago, St. Louis
4 TV shows – The Wire, Deadwood, Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Shield (with honorable mention for my DVDs of Homicide – Seasons 1-7 + The Movie. I loved that show.)
4 vacations – Ely Minnesota, Naxos, Guadalajara and thereabouts, Amsterdam
4 websites – Coeds Gone Wild, Stewardesses Gone Wild, White House Gone Wild and my personal favorite, Woody Gone Wild (with an occasional peek at Judy Miller Run Amok.) Josh Marshall & Kevin Drum, eat your goddam hearts out.
4 foods – Greens cooked down with pig parts and doused in Crystal Hot Sauce, sweet potatoes cooked almost any old way, steamed broccoli covered with good grated parmesan, most of the stinky cheeses on Acme or Arizmendi sourdough baguettes with a side of decent red wine.
4 places I’d rather be – New York City in the spring or fall, London, Greece/islands or Athens, Amsterdam – but all only for a visit of 2-3 weeks. I love Oakland.
4 albums – pretty goddam arbitrary, but I’ll pick Monk’s Music/Thelonius w/ Coleman Hawkins and Coltrane, Highway 61 Revisited/Dylan, The Original Soul Stirrers with Sam Cooke and almost any gospel album by Marion Williams. Which leaves me without Dolrothy Love Coates and the Original Gospel Harmonettes, Atlantic-era Ray Charles, Rubber Soul, Nat King Cole, Cash, Elvis, Ellington, Louie, Billie, Basie, Sonny Rollins, Van Morrison, Al Green, Marvin Gaye, Haggard, Hank Williams, Aretha and about 2 dozen other folk I refuse to be without as well. Screw this one…
December 26th, 2005 at 9:26 pm
That would be “Dorothy Love Coates” not “Dolrothy”…
December 26th, 2005 at 11:59 pm
Okay, I tried to be a good soldier, but I’m over it.
I agree with Reg about the albums. And, hey, this is a techno era in which we can choose one: an iPod.
Mine has on it —in addition to the previously mentioned Dylan, Springsteen, Cash, and Mitchell—Bob Marley, Tom Waits, Clifton Chenier, Emmylou Harris, Sam Cooke, Miles Davis, Randy Newman, Aretha, Harry Choates, Lucinda Miller, Iry LeJeune, Mahalia Jackson, Van Morrison, Hank Williams, Louis Armstrong, Willie Nelson, Dr. John, Neil Young, Frank Sinatra, Roy Orbison, the Band, U 2, Creedence, Jimi Hendrix, Maria Callas, Haggard, Paul Simon, Otis Redding, Nirvana, Leonard Cohen, Etta James, the Rolling Stones, Bright Eyes, Eric Clapton, John Lennon, Beethoven played by Horowitz….all entirely necessary.
December 27th, 2005 at 12:46 am
Woody, ah, HAH. So we DO have you to blame for Dubya! (You didn’t have any part in that whole nasty thing about Tesla getting aced out by Edison in terms of fame and fortune did you? I mean in one of your former electrically-charged lifetimes.)
In answer to your question, in my checkered past, I was a cheerleader at USC (songgirls, they called them). In terms of the job thang, I taught it professionally one college summer at various “clinics” run by the National Cheerleading Association (an organization that frighteningly enough still thrives). The clinics or camps, or whatever you want to call them, attracted thousands of terrifyingly perky high school girls from all over the country with the promise of learning new ways and means of dancing creatively about with pom-poms (many of those methods have now, of course, been outlawed by the Texas state legislature, and rightly so, I’m sure).

With a tip of the Mercedes baseball cap, wide-brimmed straw fedora, Kossack fake fur lieutenant’s hat, Fila visor, and 2005 Paralympics cap to “High Fidelity:”
Five former jobs: fermented woodchips bagger/truckloader, television reporter, legal document coder, manicurist to the claws of capitalism, tennis coach
Five movies worth rerunning: My Life as a Dog, Get Shorty, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, High Fidelity (natch), West Side Story
Five domiciles: Malibu, CA; Williams, AZ; Santa Monica, CA; Redondo Beach, CA; Tokyo, Japan
Five would love-to-watch TV shows (no satellite dish, so can’t get any current U.S. offerings): Best Little Whorehouse in Fallujah, Irony Chef, Apologies of the Week, Jackass Winter Olympics, Intelligence Squared Debates
Five vacation destinations: Shanghai, China; Phi Phi Island, Thailand; Cebu Island, Philippines; Leon, Nicaragua; Bali, Indonesia
Four Web sites visited daily: New York Times, slate.com, marccooper.com, jameswolcott.com, engadget.com
Five fave foods: pizza, fish tacos, beans and rice, avocado/tomato/cheese sandwich on toasted Honey wheat berry bread, enchiladas
Five places I’d rather be: en flagrante delicto sunshine (c’mon, natch!) on the teak deck of a villa overlooking Dreamland beach, Bali; mid-air off a headwall at Niseko, Hokkaido, Japan; slammin’ tennis with my best buddies in Melbourne before watching the Australian Open finals; slam dancing to the Clash live at the Hollywood Palladium in 1982; jet skiing to a deserted beach on Phi Phi Island, Thailand, then en flagrante delicto sunshine…
Five essential albums: Joe Jackson “Big World,” The Clash “London Calling,” Elvis Costello “This Year’s Model,” The English Beat “I Just Can’t Stop It,” Ben Folds “Rockin’ the Suburbs”
December 27th, 2005 at 3:18 am
rosedog, your including Otis Redding in your song selections surprised me, as I viewed his popularity as being primarily regional in the South. I saw him live at a sorority leadout back when, and I had “The Best of Otis Redding” album until my mom moved after I had left home and tossed it along with “The Best of…The Temptations, the Four Tops, Lou Rawls, the Drifters, the Platters, and all sorts of MoTown records. (My sister had the Beatles and Beach Boy albums. Before that and as a kid, I had gotten mad at her and invented the first Frisbees by sailing her Elvis and other records across the street into the woods. I later felt guilty and went to retrieve the records, but the sun had already melted them.) I liked Otis Redding’s version of “Respect,” which preceded Aretha Franklin’s, but my favorite song was his version of “Try a Little Tenderness,” for which I once could do a great impersonation of him doing that song–if all of you want something horrible to imagine as you go to bed, but it really was good…at that time. To me and again at that time, that song defined soul. It started slow and ended with a lot of energy. Two nights ago I was listening to one of the college stations that plays all sorts of music, and they played Otis’ version of “My Girl,” which was different but I think as good as the original by The Temptations. I don’t know if you knew it, but I was like Steve Martin in “The Jerk”….I was born a poor black child. (Which reminds me and some advice for all of you…”Lord loves a workin’ man; don’t trust whitey; see a doctor and get rid of it.”)
December 27th, 2005 at 4:48 am
“I viewed his popularity as being primarily regional in the South.”
C’mon Woody…never heard of “Monterey Pop” ? By the time of his death (on way to a gig in Wisconsin!!!) he was an icon up there with Hendrix. The best version I’ve heard of “Tenderness” is on the “Live in Europe” album. If you love that song, pick up the CD. There’s also a great Otis live moment on an old Atlantic “Apollo Saturday Night” album featuring Ben E.King, Doris Troy, The Falcons w/ Wilson Pickett and Rufus Thomas, where Otis comes out and does “Pain In My Heart” and you can hear the girls in the front row calling out to him, “Sing it pretty, Otis”. The soul singer who, to my mind, defined the grits and grease end of the genre as definitively as Otis but never broke really big beyond the Apollo, Regal, etc. circuit, is Solomon Burke.
As for the Jerk thing Woody, I’m sure your mother would love you if you were the color of a baboon’s ass.
Which reminds me…Bunkerbuster, next time you go on vacation be sure to rub a good sun blocker on yours…en flagrante in the sunshine is all well and good, but you want to be sure you can still sit down to dinner after.
And rosedog thanks for giving a nod to Beethoven. Without the 7th symphony – at the very least – life would not be the same. With a nod to Gary Oldman, the crazy sonofabitch fits nicely on the same iPod with the Sex Pistols or whoever. I always think of him as the Charlie Mingus of classical music, while Mozart is the Charlie Parker. One pair was undoubtedly just as screwy as the other in their personal lives, but as artists Bird and Mozart had the flawless voices of the heavens, while Mingus and Beethoven could be equally sublime, but let you in on their demons and dark side as well. I, of course, prefer the latter.
Okay, I got through that without making any snide aside about a baboon’s ass as the the source of Woody’s political pontifications. Must still be feeling the Christmas thing. Don’t worry, it’ll wear off!
December 27th, 2005 at 6:00 am
Also rosedog, I enjoyed your nod to Crescent Dragonwagon. Very cool cookbooks. My sister’s become friends with her via some super successful book signings Crescent’s done at her gift shop and gallery in Springfield Mo. The Dairy Hollow House B&B/restaurant in Eureka Springs, Arkansas is closed and turned into a writer’s retreat. If you ever make it to the Ozarks – which are beautiful – it’s worth a trip down there. Very touristy little town, but lovely. Reminds me of some of the little towns in northern CA like Capitola, Sonoma or Sausalito that are way past their prime as authentically quaint but still sort of fun to hang out in for an afternoon. Among the things I love about Eureka Springs is the Giant Concrete Jesus that looms over the place. It was home of the pro-fascist, anti-FDR radio preacher, Gerald L.K.Smith – the Pat Robertson of the ’30s and ’40s – and his garish, godawful Passion Play runs to this day in imitation of the one over in Obersturmbundfuhrer or whatever it’s called in Germany. His “Jesus Wants You To Be Mean & Stupid” minions have recently opened up a creationist dinosaur museum in town. No shit… But the place also has a great Blues Festival and lots of other good live music (we just missed Mavis Staples), it’s crawling with arts and crafts types, gay rainbow flags fly over some of the shops, it’s very biker-friendly (both kinds). Plus the food’s good and believe it or not some of the wine from that part of the midwest is getting interesting – especially since they quit making it out of dandelions and rhubarb (although the local brews are still a better bet.) My wife couldn’t believe that there was a cool little place like that stuck in the hills of the Ozarks.
December 27th, 2005 at 6:23 am
“Mark A. York, you’re right”
This is the only thing Woody’s said I agree with. When someone has to play off a typo for an ad hominem and make fun of old people you know the game is lost, for them.
Feldman is the correct choice and a confused character on an island is the perfect analogy for you. No need for dragging the Irish into this.
December 27th, 2005 at 7:03 am
Ah, Capitola! July 4, 1978. Spent the summer at the New Brighton Beach campground (in a tent) with two hippies from Arizona, two pot heads from Canada, two Swedish girls on a summer lark, and my buddy from home (we had hitchhiked from Boston). One of my best summers ever.
Thanks for reminding me.

Four jobs you’ve had in your life: Leather lumper; Sole separator; High-School English teacher; Software development manager
Four movies you could watch over and over: Lawrence of Arabia; It’s A Gift; Gettysburg; The Slums of Beverly Hills
Four places you’ve lived: Brockton, MA; New York; Hollywood; Jerusalem — Unreal
Four TV shows you love to watch: Curb Your Enthusiasm; Baseball Tonight; Seinfeld reruns; Then Came Bronson (on extended hiatus)
Four places you’ve been on vacation: Ely Minnesota; Cairo (not Illinois), Prague; Cape Cod
Four websites you visit daily (present company excepted): Sons of Sam Horn; sacred-texts.com, James Wolcott; Arts and Letters Daily
Four of your favorite foods: potato pudding; hashed brown potatoes; french-fries; mashed potatoes
Four places you’d rather be: On the shores of the Kinnereth (preferably Kibbutz Ginosar), the Pemigawassett Wilderness in mid-summer with a storm about to break, Lake Solitude in the Grand Tetons, Woods Hole
Four albums you can’t live without: It’s been twenty years at least since I couldn’t live without an album. I can’t remember the album specifics so I’ll just list the musicians/groups: John Coltrane, Bob Marley, HaBrera HaTivith, Jimi Hendrix
In addition, I’d like to note that I’m fond of bubble baths and long walks on the beach. If the ocean itself is frothy and bubbly, so much the better.
December 27th, 2005 at 9:23 am
“sacred-texts.com”
Wow! It’s not a site that I visit daily, but it is one of the best resources around, period. Just about every religious tradition and mythos is covered in great detail.

There’s nothing better when you’re in a gnostic mood.
FYI – I’ve enjoyed visiting some of the esoteric political sites you’ve referenced in your posts (have returned to them more than once).

I had never heard of Ely, Minnesota until reg and evets said they had vacationed there–presumably, not together. It seems to be a winter paradise. http://weather.noaa.gov/weather/current/KELO.html Of course, I looked it up on google and found that it is a pretty interesting place for outdoor activities. Here you can read about it: http://www.ely.org/ .
How many people besides me have visited this town? http://www.attention-to-details.com/newslog/3b4-a-town-called-smut-eye.asp
December 27th, 2005 at 11:37 am
Pemigewasset. I worked out of the ranger district there twice.
December 27th, 2005 at 11:54 am
Ely’s got wolves, loons, glacial lakes and deep, deep woods. Good for fishing, hiking, horshoes, and late afternoon gin and tonics — great family vacation spot.
Pemigewasset, as I’m sure Mark can attest, is just plain beautiful. It’s good for whatever ails.
December 27th, 2005 at 12:07 pm

This is a great source for getting a hold of old-fashioned, dead tree books.

Thanks very much. Looks interesting.

“….but let you in on their demons and dark side as well. I, of course, prefer the latter.†Yep, yep, yep. Love Mozart. But he’s not on the iPod. (No, wait. I have Sull’aria from Figaro, as channeled through the soundtrack for the Shawshank Redemption. Pretty unearthly.)
Speaking of dark sides, I always keep a few Will Oldham songs on the ol’ iPod too, (decidedly a depressed but poetic guy), along with Cash’s amazing version of Oldham’s “I See A Darkness.â€
Evets, Sacred-Texts is extremely cool. Thanks for the reference. (The section on Tarot alone…..Did I mention Tarot card reader on my list of former jobs. Nevermind. I was rarely paid for it.) By the way, what’s a “leather lumper…†…?
Reg…I used to know Crescent slightly though odd circumstances, but haven’t talked to her in some time. Yet, many of her wonderful expressions, like “gift in black wrapping paper,†used to describe the traumatic life event that ends up leading to some life-enhancing change, have long-ago been gratefully incorporated as my own. Never been to see her in the Ozarks, though. Sounds like a necessary addition to the “Must Do†list.
December 27th, 2005 at 1:10 pm
A leather lumper lumps leather, preferably with panache. In fact, with or without panache, the leather lumper carries rolls of “upper” leather from their storage bins to an inspection table. A trained eye will then peruse the leather, seeking defects — briar marks, wire scrapes, tender ripples where the skin was once distended by fat. Once a skin is deemed acceptable, it is piled onto a cart with its humble brothers to be wheeled to a shoe cutter, who will begin its transformation into fine footwear.
A sole separator, by the way, sifts through piles of leather insoles and gades each according to its purity, its freedom from the defects described above. The lowest form of sole, worth only a pittance, is termed a “body sole”. The felicity of this phrasing only goes to show that you don’t need sacred-texts.com for a glimpse at the truth beyond the truth. As Whitman might have said had he spent more time in Brockton, MA, former shoe capitol of the world:
“I bequeathe myself to the dirt, to grow from the grass I love;
If you want me again, look for me in your boot-soles.”
December 27th, 2005 at 1:15 pm
“I used to know Crescent slightly though odd circumstances”
I don’t know her except through the books and anecdotes my sister, who adores her, passes along to me…
December 27th, 2005 at 1:57 pm
Thanks for the explanation, Evets. Including the “truth beyond the truth.”
And love that Whitman verse.
December 27th, 2005 at 3:03 pm
Yeah boy the shoe shops were tough. I had a recycled textile plant job that was a nightmare too. I broke open bails of old sweaters and separated them out by material. That one was down the street from Stephen King’s current place, but not back then in 72.

Four jobs you’ve had in your life: bakery grunt, bank teller, office temp, loan officer
Four movies you could watch over and over: (only four?!?): La Jetee; Annie Hall; Velvet Goldmine; The Third Man

Four websites you visit daily: Doug Ireland’s site; commondreams.org; juancole.com; marccooper.com
Four of your favorite foods: pumkin pie (it’s that time of year); tacos; Thai food; a big mixed green salad

Four albums you can’t live without: Billy Bragg, Workers Playtime; Silvio Rodriguez, Mujeres;
Beck, Mutations; Joni Mitchell, Blue

Evets,
Bequeathe myself to the dirt, to grow from the grass I love;
If you want me again, look for me in your boot-soles.†Very profound!
I’m all for ecology, conservation and recycling—could our next topic for discussion be global warming?
“Meme of four”–was a good idea until it started to sound a little like Match.com; and that’s one website they would have to “pay me” to visit.
December 27th, 2005 at 3:49 pm
Eleanore kjellberg -
As they say at match.com:
You will hardly know who I am, or what I mean;
But I shall be good health to you nevertheless,
And filter and fibre your blood.
Failing to fetch me at first, keep encouraged;
Missing me one place, search another;
I stop somewhere, waiting for you.
December 27th, 2005 at 4:01 pm
Oh, piffle, Eleanore. The tryptophan high will end soon enough, so leave be while it holds.
December 27th, 2005 at 4:14 pm
I just have to add Raise the Red Lantern, I have watched that film so many times, and not mentioning it is just sinful.
December 27th, 2005 at 4:31 pm
There is that in me… I do not know what it is… but I know it is in me.
Wrenched and sweaty… calm and cool then my body becomes;
I sleep… I sleep long.
Yep, That’s me after two hours of tennis on a 90 degree day. I can’t wait for summer–some like it hot.
December 27th, 2005 at 5:08 pm
Hey Jack I worked in Covelo. Eleanore global warming is always a topic on my blog. I’m even writing an answer novel to State of Fear. http://www.realclimate .org is the clearing house for the real scoop on the subject. Except for Woody and Roper of course. The truth is “biased” they say.
December 27th, 2005 at 6:29 pm
Clearly I don’t really check this site every day, since I am coming in on what smells like a dead thread. Anyway, to help me remember:
Four jobs you’ve had in your life: Children’s inflatable-castle-party supervisor; vacuum cleaner assemblyman (I lasted 24 hours!); wedding videographer; hay bailer.
Four movies you could watch over and over: Do the Right Thing; The Magnificent Ambersons; Children of Paradise; M. (This is painful: no Fassbinder, Godard, Renoir, Cagney, Gabin, Mifune, Tati, Hawks, Cronenberg, Lubitsch, Wong Kar Wai, Sirk…)
Four places you’ve lived: Silver Lake, California; Berlin, Germany; Addlestone, England; and Canterbury, England.
Four TV shows you love to watch: I haven’t really watched TV in years, so I will choose the one recent series I have seen (The Office – UK original, as if it needs to be said) and three I loved when I was younger (Fawlty Towers, The Muppets and Dogtanian and the Three Muskehounds).
Four places you’ve been on vacation: China; Tanzania; the wrong side of Majorca (the disgusting, informal-British-colony side); Venice, Italy.
Four websites you visit daily: Direland, this one, Slate.com, http://www.guardian.co.uk
Four of your favorite foods: pupusas; the Pud See Ewe from Sanamluang in Hollywood; creme brulee; and a Schweinhax’n with potato dumplings from that place by the toy museum in Munich.
Four places you’d rather be: Chantal’s House of Shame in Berlin; Tuolomne Meadows in Yosemite; Tiger Leaping Gorge in southwest China; in bed with my boyfriend just before he wakes up in the morning.
Four albums you can’t live without: It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back – Public Enemy; Glenn Gould playing the Goldberg Variations; 3 Feet High and Rising – De La Soul; Hunky Dory – David Bowie.
This is a lovely way of getting recommendations for expanding my horizons from people I read every day and whose tastes and judgments I have learned, in some cases, to trust. Thank you.

No former cheerleader for a top-flight football school like Southern Cal should ever use an expression like ‘Oh piffle’. It’s disorienting.
Eleanore kjellberg –
‘I can’t wait for summer – some like it hot.’ Marvelous stuff. And yet you claim to be concerned over global warming. I sense a contradiction here, no? Or is it just that you’re large, that you contain multitudes.
December 27th, 2005 at 6:36 pm
Mark,
I don’t want to sound ignorant, but how do I access your blog? The Truth Is Truth and Ignorance is NOT bliss–well maybe it is for some people.
December 27th, 2005 at 7:03 pm
Evet,
Do you mean “large” like in oversized male ego?
Or are you attempting to fantasize what I might look like. I was right, we are beginning to sound like Match.com–Soon we’ll be sending digitalized photos instead of written responses.
Let’s get back to politics!
December 27th, 2005 at 7:12 pm
I don’t drink or smoke weed, so little of the current conversation is making much sense to me.
Eleanore, if you want to learn more about global warming and related cost/benefit analyses, first decide to make up your own mind about it. Don’t fall into the trap of blindly accepting bad science and bad politics from others. Until Marc Cooper puts up another post on this, here is a reliable search site to get your answers: http://www.gmroper.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-search.cgi?IncludeBlogs=1&search=global+warming
Trust me.

“No former cheerleader for a top-flight football school like Southern Cal should ever use an expression like ‘Oh piffle’. It’s disorienting….”
“Piffle” re-e-e-ally doesn’t work for my kid either.
Which is likely why I use it and like expressions as an occasional alternate to my natural inclination to swear copiously. “A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of… ” …and all that.
