Wiki Wiki

No, this is not a joke about missionaries being offered a choice of boling in a pot or playing "wiki-wiki."

A friend of mine wrote to tell me he found an entry for me on Wikipedia.

I read it with some trepidation. The fears eventually eased when I found the posted info to be about 99% correct (with huge omissions of course).

But then some new fears set in. Who wrote this? Who controls and filters these entries? What prevents anyone from going into one of these pieces and under the guise of "editing" just inventing a bunch of stuff?

I'm trying to sort out what is some great ambivalence about this new form. Not sure yet if I like it, though I'm flattered to have an entry.  If anybody here is responsible, thanks. I think.

Looks quite similar to the entry on you that was part of David Horowitz’s big online database of leftists.

There is nothing to prevent anyone from going into one of the pieces and under the guies of “dditing” just inventing a bunch of stuff. There is also nothing to prevent anyone from removing said garbage or “reverting” to a previous state. There are sets of community standards and processes for resolving disputes, however.

Good to know that the article is reasonably accurate. As with all Wikipedia articles, you can use the “history” function to see which users made what changes to the article — http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Marc_Cooper&action=history

In this case, you will find that the article was started by “Trey Stone”, a right-wing high school senior with a penchant for picking fights over articles about U.S. foreign policy. It was immediately rewriten by Viajero, an American expatriate and prolific contributor for whom I have great respect.

Who controls and filters the article? No one and everyone. A large number of volunteers monitor “recent changes” made to the Wiki and revert any obvious vandalism. Others with an interest in specific articles place them on a “Watchlist”, so that they can keep a closer eye on material in which they have some interest or expertise. But there is no single authority which oversees and authorizes changes to content.

You should feel free, incidentally, to edit the article yourself, so long as any additions you make are verifiable and written from a neutral point of view.

The material on wikipedia is written by the same people who most likely visit your website often; maybe even post questions or comments to you. It’s nothing to get paranoid about. Also, it appears no one has bothered to try the “discussion” section before typing the article on you - maybe you should try it - but the “history” section shows the majority of the writting comes from someone named “Trey Stone”.

Wikipedia, in particular, can be variable. My primary interest hs been in what has been written with respect to 17th Century history. A year ago, I had corrected some errors that were blatant. I have more recently seen an entry for a historical pesonage, Witte Corneliszoon de With, that was accurate and informative. Unlike blogging, the wiki phenomenon is more anonymous and seems to lack accountability.

More bias by publishers! The entry fails to mention your greatest passion–your experiences and articles related to fishing. I think you should attach a picture of you holding a big catch.

The entry could use some livining up, as it reads like an obituary. Just keep checking back from time-to-time to make sure that no one has entered your date of passing. Also, it leaves out your religious affiliations. Should I put in Southern Baptist for you, or is Scientology better given its current popularity by Tom Cruise? Also, your thoughts on the border problem might be addressed.

Know what’s great about that service? You don’t have to wait for some union employee to come over to type in what you could do for yourself faster and cheaper.

“Can I do one for reg?”

That’s why I never use a real identity for internet comments anymore.

  8. Woody Says:

Believe me, reg, I really would never do that.

I had issues with someone haunting me on the internet, so I quit using my full name. It makes a google search less productive. I suspect that you are hiding behind a different personality and are really a conservative. In that event, it must be tough having to take the positions that you do.

I wonder why Trey Stone or anyone would start such an entry on Cooper or anyone whom they didn’t know in some fashion?

Woody, I’m actually a twelve year old girl commenting from Vanuatu…

  10. Michael Balter Says:

It would be nice if Woody and Reg would take things outside and not constantly muck up these otherwise interesting blog threads.

  11. Woody Says:

What!!?? I think that you’ll almost always find that reg and I are on point, and you’ll also find that I probably haven’t posted six times in over a week, so I don’t *constantly* muck up interesting threads–such as this *very interesting* one that had a full nine comments on it. Just because you live in Paris doesn’t mean that you have to act like those people. Lighten up.

  12. reg Says:

Yeah, it was wrong of us to assume that Marc posting his Wikipedia bio might be an occasion for a bit of humor. Sorry…

  13. Jamie Says:

A question for the posters here? What role do you think GI resistance played in Vietnam in stopping the war? From what I understand there were several hundred fraggings (mostly by black GI’s) and a general breakdown in willingness to fight. Is GI resistance out of the questiobn in Iraq?
