Because it’s democratic. Pre-industrial baseball, like its modernist offshoot US football, is fascistic.

Okay, your posts have now moved from quaint and amusing to downright entertaining. I can't wait for my next trip to Nicaragua so I can start a new campaign, from the slums of Managua to the hills of Estelí, that all children must cease serving as imperialist tools and reject the game of baseball de una vez! And those kwazy Cubanos, ironically supporting the very fascist regimes they have so successfully fended off in every other way since 1959--absolutely jaw-dropping news, and I think we can expect Granma to print this story on its front page.

Oh, and you've just inspired me to join forces for the next cleansing task: ridding Hispanoamerica (whoops, I mean Latin America--er, Aztlan and the rest) of the most insidious tool of conquest: the Spanish language! Just thinking of the millions of duped souls sycophantically (it's okay to use this word a third time, verdad?) sucking at the teat of the fascistic Indo-European language family makes me want to retch. Time for a massic re-education language camp!

I hope you've brushed up on your Nahuatl and Mayan languages, for starters. Let the purge and healing begin...

Sergio,

It is becoming more popular in Australia and it is popular in Canada as well.

As for its popularity in Japan, that precedes WWII. Indeed, Japan's professional league started in 1920.

You have a better argument with cricket as that sport is only popular in the UK and former British colonies.

...Cuba, Panamá, República Dominicana, Puerto Rico, Nicaragua,... and Japan

Baseball is performed only where US Empire militarists have invaded and established a long term presence. That is one of the many points you miss Samuel. It is an expression of compliance of gringo torpor, much like your compliance of and sycophancy for abusive and amateurish posts.

I agree with Randy re basketball, the world's #2 sport after mocking GW Bush. Why? Because it's democratic. Pre-industrial baseball, like its modernist offshoot US football, is fascistic.

Not like futbol or futebol, which is still the most popular sport in Latin America and basketball, as the internationalization of the NBA is demonstarting, is becoming the world's second most popular sport.

Linear, clueless, and sycophantic is no way to end up, old puritan man.

Baseball's bloated turgor of 18 men plus base coaches, bullpen pitchers, ballboys, untrod massive expanses of grass, hordes of food-filled people in trances, and only 1-2 of all of the above actually moving....

is well matched by its flaccidity: the limp play , its listless communication between players , the pedantic suspension of time,
its geriatric fan base.

This useless 19th century archeogame was thankfully excised by the Olympics.

You gotta hide better that you're a Hillary fan, gringo.

Turgid, flaccid

wtf? Coño, you might want to put down the thesaurus. Or at least learn how to use it properly, to avoid the embarrassment of throwing up antonyms of words you're trying to convey. Hilarious.

Also, I hope your obsessions with both reg and phallic adjectives are coincidental, for his sake.

Oh, and as a Laker fan, I can honestly say that the basketball they are playing of late--pass to Kobe, stay out of the way--is about as stultifying as you can get. Looks like another first-round exit. (Damn your injuries, Kwame.)

Sergio -

'Turgid' and 'flaccid' are near-antonyms, a little like baseball and basketball, two beautiful games each of which has a place of honor in the lexicon of American sport.

If by 'reg-like' you mean our frequent commentator 'reg', I can only say that he would never make this sort of mistake, as his writing is consistently articulate, lively and incisive.

Actually, Bush's 9-11 performance was mediocre at best. He got a big, fat, wet, fake patriotic wet media kiss that went on WAY too long. The rest is our sad recent history.

Turgid, flaccid, stultifying, reg-like baseball is a metaphor for 19th-20th century failed gringo imperialism.

It sucks.

And Marc I'd like to add another question for Ralph today. Does he think justices appointed by Al Gore would have joined Scalia, Kennedy and Thomas today and approve the ban on so-called late term abortions?
