reg, if you had spent 1% of the time to help Richard that you did in getting Obama elected, he may still be around. You guys are so self-righteous but spend more time placing blame on others and demanding more help from others than you are willing to contribute yourself.

In response on the first post about him, I tried to find solutions rather than blame society or Richard.

To say the least, I was surprised and I hurt for Richard. I admire his courage to open himself to many of us who know him in a fashion.

It’s not important for Richard to blame himself or for anyone to say what he should have done. What’s important is to fix the problem, for which we are willing to help…if he will vote against Obama. Okay, not really on that last part. I assume that Celeste is working on a process where many can pitch in and that she will let us know about it. Maybe a paypal account for Richard is a possibility, but I think that they do require a credit card.

Richard’s situation has been known to his confidants, and I wonder if they have been helping him and others in need or just campaigning for laws to do that with other people’s money. With all the liberals in southern California, surely someone has a garage or basement apartment that could be put to use for his shelter. Surely someone has an extra car that sits around mostly unused. Perhaps, someone has a job that requires his brain (even though I wouldn’t completely trust the right hemisphere.) Fortunately, he seems to be getting medical care through the VA or some public facility.

Finally, there are other resources in times of need–family primarily, the church, friends, etc. I suppose those avenues have not worked or ran their courses, but it’s always worth considering again.

And, what’s this “even the conservative posters, like Woody” business? I am a compassionate conservative.

I was looking for solutions while you guys used Richard’s situation to place blame on our system.

I should have known that President Reagan would get blamed. It’s funny how homelessness is only an issue when Republicans are running things but instantly go off the headlines when a Democrat is in office. …Still, while I very much sympathize with Richard, pointing fingers at others for what may be a lifetime of missteps isn’t necessarily correct and is not helpful. What is he doing to improve decisions that he makes so that this doesn’t become a cycle? This help and attention can make a permanent difference rather than be a temporary patch, if Richard takes advantage of it to do that.

Does Richard have a resume’? That would be a start. I asked for this information early on and haven’t gotten an answer. Is there a project schedule for making Richard self-sufficient, with target dates–which presumably would be met before the short-term money runs out. Does anyone have a garage or basement apartment? Where’s his family? Good grief. Is anyone thinking ahead? How much more money could Richard use at the moment? Surely, there is more to this than appearing to care and to get a story.

I sought ways to help Richard rather than sitting around “feeling helpless.” Out of all of the concerned people in southern California and on the blogs, no one had a car or a room for him. Maybe “no room at the inn” is appropriate for the holidays.

Great tribute Reg. Thanks for putting in the Frank Norris quote. I added that quote to the site when I invited you and Richard to start posting at BH. I thought the quote was the essence of Richard.

He was indeed a model of maturity, intelligence and good judgment. His contributions invariably focused on facts and either broadened or deepened the discussion — sometimes both.

To hear that he’d fallen on hard times is a real shocker. You’d never know it from his posts. His disposition seemed to be that of a very knowledgeable retired professor who happily kept up on public affairs and had been doing so for decades.

He may have been homeless, but died a far richer man intellectually than many who comment here can hope to.
